A beautiful silk press starts long before the flat iron touches your hair.

Cleansing, conditioning, detangling, blow-drying, heat protection, and technique all contribute to the finished result.

The goal is smooth movement without applying more heat than necessary.

Start With Clean Hair

Product buildup can make a silk press feel heavy.

Use a shampoo appropriate for your hair and current level of buildup, then follow with a conditioner that provides enough slip for detangling.

Heat Protectant Is Essential

Before blow-drying or flat ironing, use a heat-protection product designed for thermal styling.

Follow the directions carefully, including the amount recommended.

Blow-Dry Thoroughly

A smooth blow-dry creates a better foundation for flat ironing.

Use controlled sections and appropriate tension rather than repeatedly passing the dryer over tangled hair.

Choose a Good Flat Iron

Temperature control matters.

The highest setting is not automatically the best setting.

Use a temperature appropriate for your hair and minimize unnecessary passes.

Finish Lightly

Heavy oils and serums can destroy the movement that makes a silk press look silky.

Use finishing products sparingly.

A successful silk press is less about collecting dozens of products and more about preparation and controlled heat.
